about being an artist

I am a visual artist currently working on my Masters of Sustainable Design from the Minneapolis School of Art and Design. I am a recent graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design University graduating in 2019 with a BFA in Sculpture/ Installation.  You can see more work at virginiagailsmith.com

public art projects

We received a Cultural Heritage Award in 2020 for our leadership role with the Wiidosendiwag + Walking Together + Marchons Ensemble Tour along with Trish Nadjiwon Meekins, and Susan Staves, located in Owen Sound ON, completed in 2019. This tour chronicles the impact of colonialism on the Saugeen Ojibway Nation, highlighting their culture and settler relationship. Visit virginiagailsmith.com/publicart

The tour meanders along 3 kilometers of guided trail to five significant locations where sculptures and plaques affirm the historical elements and guide you to the 25 stories in three languages.

sustainable art vision

Experimenting with sustainable art mediums I thought of growing bacteria and yeast

using honey and tea creating this cellulose material which is then dried and formed.
